Cristiano Ronaldo’s Career & Teams

In the summer of 2003, Sporting beat Manchester United 3–1 in the inauguration of the Alvalade XXI stadium in Lisbon. Ronaldo demonstrated his ability to play on both wings. After the match, United’s players spoke enthusiastically of the young talent that they had just played against, saying they would rather have him in their team than play against him in the future.
Alex Ferguson decided that he wanted Ronaldo for his team, who needed a right-sided midfielder with the departure of David Beckham to Real Madrid. Ronaldo was signed for a fee of £12.24 million, which seems nothing now after seeing what he has developed into.

Ronaldo made his united debut on the 16th August 2003 and wasted little time in showing off his sublime skills with a stunning 30-minute display against Bolton at Old Trafford. He won a penalty which Ruud Van Nistelrooy took. However it was saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen.

In 2006 Ronaldo signed a new deal with United that would last until 2010. Ronaldo said of the deal, “United have stood by me and been there for me and I want to repay that”.

He has won countless awards. In December 006, he was awarded the Barclays Player of the Month Award for the second successive month, becoming the third ever player in the Premiership to do so (after Arsenal’s Dennis Bergkamp in 1997 and Robbie Fowler in 1996)

Ronaldo occasionaly needs to control his temper. Players often get frustrated with his quick feet and taunt him. During United’s second match of the 2007-08 season against Portsmouth, Ronaldo was sent off for his alleged headbutt of Richard Hughes. Although there appeared to be little contact between the two players, referee Steve Bennett was standing right next to Ronaldo and was quick to show him the red card. After the match, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Ronaldo was provoked by Hughes, and that he had “fallen into the trap”.

Torres and Fergie await the crowning of World Player of the Year-elect Cristiano Ronaldo

Only five days remain for the world to know who will be the next Ballon d’Or winner. Due to his amazing performance last season, Cristiano Ronaldo has become the hot favourite to win the award.

Barcelona’s Argentine Superstar Lionel Messi, Spain’s Euro 2008 winning captain Iker Casillas and striker Fernando Torres also all vie for the honour.

However, Liverpool’s number 9 fully believes that Ronaldo is the right man for the price.

“No-one can rival him,” the Spaniard told France Football a week ago. “He is in a class of his own. I have never seen a comparable player.”

“What he did last season is incredible,” Torres continued. “No-one won this year what he’s won: UEFA Champions League, Premier League and Golden Boot,” he added.

El Nino had a wonderful season with Manchester United’s archrivals Liverpool; He bagged 33 goals in the entire season and finished second best with 24 goals in the Premier League’s Top Scorers Chart.
But Torres seems far from feeling any kind of jealousy or dissatisfaction should he not win both the Ballon d’Or and the Fifa Player of the Year awards.

“For me he is the best player in the world,” Torres explained, talking about Ronaldo. “A machine. Incomparable,” he concluded.

Torres is not the only one to think that Ronaldo is undoubtedly the right candidate for the prestigious award.
Manchester United’s boss Sir Alex Ferguson also expressed himself on this issue two nights ago, after his side’s game away to Villareal.

“If Ronaldo doesn’t win the Ballon D’Or this season I will quit as manager,” Fergie said to SKY Italia with a smile.

What a harsh threat to the voters from the 66 year old coach! The reality is that Ferguson – who hasn’t decided himself yet to quit his managerial career in football – is not ready either to see someone else than his beloved Ronaldo grabbing the Ballon d’Or into his hands.

Cristiano Ronaldo wins the Ballon d’Or at last!

Early this morning, Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned Golden Ball winner for the 2007/08 season.
The Portugal and Manchester United Superstar winger earned 77 of the 96 votes - around 80% of the total votes, beatting Lionel Messi of Argentina and Liverpool’s Fernando Torres to claim the price.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke the records, amassing 446 points, two more than his predecessor Kaka.
Second placed Messi had 281 points, while Torres got 179 points. Casillas, Xavi Hernandez, Arshavin, Villa, Kaka, Ibrahimovic, and Steven Gerrard took the remaining 7 places, sharing amongst them in the same other 438 points.

The 23 year old had an impressive and unique season – scoring over 40 goals for Manchester United and helping the team win both the Champions League and the EPL. This is what Ronaldo had to say to France Football:

“To win this award at just 23 years of age is incredible, because I only started my career a few years ago,” he told the magazine.

“But it is fantastic as there were a lot of other big names in the race this year such as [Lionel] Messi, [Fernando] Torres and even Xavi.

“All these players could have won it but nevertheless, I’m happy to have taken it.”

Ronaldo also went on to congratulate his team-mates.

He said: “I have to thank all my team-mates who helped me become the best.
“I was never afraid of whether or not I would win it because I was always conscious of the great year I had last season.

“This is one of the happiest days of my life. Those who know me or who have lived with me know that this is a dream come true for me.

“But tomorrow morning in training, I will still be the same person as always.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is only the 3rd Portuguese to win the Ballon d’Or after Eusebio and Luis Figo. He is also the fourth Red Devil player to win the French award after Denis Law (1964), Sir Bobby Charlton (1966) and George Best (1968).
Cristiano Ronaldo, who last year finished second in the running, is the second consecutive Manchester United number 7 to win the Golden Ball. Coincidently, Ronaldo marks the 40th anniversary of George Best’s triumph.

Does this have anything to do with the mesmerising power of the number 7 jersey?

Now there’s another price, the Fifa Player of the Year award, which Ronaldo eyes. This award has never been won by a Premiership player, but Ronaldo could make history by being the first to receive it.
